Silence can communicate many different meanings depending on the situation and communication context.
Silence may express:
- reflection,
- politeness,
- disagreement,
- emotional reaction,
- uncertainty,
- attentiveness,
- or discomfort.
Different people and communities may interpret silence differently.
Discussion Prompt:
Reflect on the role of silence in communication.
Answer the following questions:
- In your experience, when is silence considered appropriate or respectful?
- When might silence feel uncomfortable?
- Have you ever misunderstood someone’s silence?
- How do expectations about silence differ in:
- classrooms,
- workplaces,
- online meetings,
- or personal conversations?
Provide at least one example from your own experience or observation.
