Activity Overview:
This journal activity encourages students to practice English writing daily by reflecting briefly on their day. By summarizing their experience in three sentences, students build concise storytelling skills and focus on essential vocabulary and grammar in a manageable format. This activity is great for beginner and intermediate ESOL students who are building comfort with writing in English.
Instructions for Learners:
Objective: Write a short journal entry every day to practice English writing and describe your day in just three sentences.
Steps:
-
Choose a Time: Every day, find a quiet moment to think about your day. It could be in the morning, afternoon, or evening – whenever works best for you.
-
Reflect on Your Day: Think about what was interesting, surprising, or memorable today. Consider any specific activities, emotions, or interactions you had.
-
Write Three Sentences:
- Sentence 1: Describe one main thing you did today.
- Sentence 2: Share how you felt or what you thought about it.
- Sentence 3: Summarize or add any last thoughts about your day.
Example:
"Today, I went to the park with my friend. We laughed a lot and enjoyed the sunshine. I felt happy and relaxed."
-
Check Your Grammar and Vocabulary: After writing, quickly review your sentences. Make sure you used the correct verb tenses (past or present) and spelled words accurately.
-
Submit (Optional): If your teacher asks you to, submit your journal entry each day. This will help you track your progress over time!
Additional Tips:
- Keep it simple: Focus on what was most important or memorable today. Don’t worry about making it perfect!
- Use new words: If you learned any new words today, try to use them in your sentences.
- Be consistent: Writing every day will improve your English skills. Aim to write even on weekends.
