This activity explores how jokes and sarcasm may be interpreted differently across cultures.
Example Scenario
A colleague says after technical problems:
โWell, this presentation is clearly going perfectly.โ
Some people laugh immediately. Others appear confused.
Student Task
Choose ONE:
- a joke,
- sarcastic comment,
- meme,
- or humorous situation
from your own culture or communication experience.
Then explain:
- Why people might find it funny.
- What cultural knowledge is necessary to understand it.
- Why it might create misunderstanding internationally.
- How humor can sometimes create discomfort or exclusion.

You may upload:
- screenshots,
- memes,
- short video clips,
- or dialogue examples.
