Intercultural misunderstandings are a normal part of communication across cultures, languages, and social contexts. In this activity, you will reflect on a real communication misunderstanding you experienced, observed, or learned about.
The goal is not to blame anyone, but to analyze how different expectations, communication styles, or cultural assumptions may have influenced the interaction.
Discussion Instructions
Describe a communication misunderstanding involving:
- politeness,
- humor,
- silence,
- indirectness,
- tone,
- or nonverbal communication.
You may describe:
- an academic situation,
- workplace interaction,
- online communication,
- travel experience,
- or everyday conversation.
In your post:
- Briefly explain what happened.
- Identify possible causes of misunderstanding.
- Explain how participants interpreted the situation differently.
- Suggest one repair or adaptation strategy that could improve communication.
