Section outline
In intercultural communication, people may interpret directness and indirectness differently. A message that sounds polite in one communication environment may sound rude, unclear, or overly formal in another.

- communication expectations were different.

- Explain why misunderstanding occurred.
- Identify the speech act involved (request, apology, refusal, etc.).
- Explain how communication could have been improved.
