📹 Video Instructions — Academic Presentations in 10 Easy Steps (YouTube, 2025) Watch this video before you begin planning your recorded presentation: (Duration: approximately 10 minutes)
As you watch, take notes on the following:
- What does the video say about how to open a presentation effectively? Write down the recommended opening structure.
- Which of the 10 steps do you feel least confident about? Make a note — this is the area to focus on when you practise.
- What advice is given about slides or visual support? How will you apply this to your own recording?
After watching, create a brief presentation outline using this structure before you record:
- Opening (greeting, topic, preview of main points)
- Main Point 1 + supporting example
- Main Point 2 + supporting example
- Closing (summary + final thought)
Do not record until you have this outline written. Students who plan first consistently deliver stronger presentations.
📖 Reading Instructions — Academic Discussion Phrases (EAP Foundation) Visit the following page: https://www.eapfoundation.com/vocab/academic/discussion-phrases/
This resource organises academic discussion language by function — agreeing, disagreeing, giving opinions, asking for clarification, and more. It is specifically designed for university-level academic discussions.
Follow these steps:
- Read through the categories on the page. Focus especially on: Giving your opinion, Agreeing and disagreeing, and Building on someone's point.
- Select six phrases — two from each of those three categories — that feel natural to you and that you would actually use in a spoken discussion.
- Write your six chosen phrases in your notes. Before joining the Week 4 group discussion forum activity, read them once so they are fresh in your mind.
- In your forum discussion post, use at least two of these phrases deliberately. Your instructor will be looking for academic discussion language as part of your participation grade.
Tip: Print or screenshot this page and keep it open during your first few discussion activities. With practice, these phrases will become natural and automatic.
