There are 6 steps in this activity:

  1. Level Selection: Take the VOA Learning English level test to determine your starting point by selecting "Test Your English" at the top of the page
  2. Select Your Video: students can choose any video they would like to watch, but here are my suggestions in case you need help choosing:
    1. beginners may want to start with "Lesson 1: Who are you?"
    2. intermediate learners may want choose "English @ the Movies"
    3. advanced learners may want to choose "American Stories" or "Words & Their Stories"
  3. Active Listening: Before looking at the transcript, watch the video once through. Afterwards, watch the video following along with the transcript. Highlight unknown words or phrases.
  4. Quizzing: Test your understanding by taking the quiz after each video.
  5. Review:  Note the vocabulary that you learned, and add it to your Brainscape cards.
  6. Answer: How did the people in the videos present the stories? What was their tone of voice? Look up the definitions of present (v.) and tone of voice (n.)
