Activity: "Word of the Day Reflection"
Objective:
Encourage learners to actively learn, reflect on, and apply new vocabulary in daily life, enhancing their language skills through a structured vocabulary-sharing activity.
Activity Outline
-
Preparation:
- Choose a set of 5–10 vocabulary words that are relevant to the learners' level and interests (e.g., themed around travel, emotions, work, or school).
- Prepare a "Word of the Day" template for students to fill out. The template should include sections like:
- New Word
- Meaning
- Example Sentence
- Why I Chose This Word
- How I Used It Today (or Plan to Use It)
-
Introduction (5-10 minutes):
- Briefly introduce the importance of learning new vocabulary and actively using it.
- Show an example of a completed template, explaining each section.
-
Activity Instructions:
- Ask each student to select a new English word they encountered recently (e.g., through reading, listening to music, TV shows, conversations, or classwork).
- Have students fill in their "Word of the Day" template, noting the word’s meaning, creating an original sentence, and sharing why the word interested them.
- Encourage students to think of situations where they might use the word in real life.
-
Pair Sharing (10 minutes):
- Divide the class into pairs and ask students to share their word, sentence, and usage ideas with their partner.
- Each student should give feedback, such as offering additional sentences or suggesting how the word could fit into various contexts.
-
Class Reflection (5 minutes):
- Invite volunteers to share their words with the whole class.
- Write these words on the virtual whiteboard for the class to see and discuss further.
-
Follow-Up (Homework or Next Day Activity):
- Challenge students to use their new word at least once in a real conversation, written message, or social media post, and reflect on it at the beginning of the next class.
Extensions:
- Vocabulary Journal: Encourage students to keep a digital or physical "Word Journal" to track their new words each week.
- Word Wall: Create a virtual “Word Wall” in your LMS for students to post their words and examples.
- Weekly Quiz: At the end of the week, have a quiz based on the words shared in class for reinforcement.
