Activity: Basic Grammar Rules on Present and Past Simple Tenses
Objective:
Learners will practice and reinforce their understanding of basic grammar rules for the present simple and past simple tenses through interactive exercises.
Instructions for Learners:
-
Introduction to Tenses
- Start the activity by watching a short introductory video. It will review when and how we use the present simple (for habitual actions, facts, or routines) and past simple (for actions that started and finished in the past).
- Take notes on the key points for each tense:
- Present Simple: "I walk to school every day."
- Past Simple: "I walked to school yesterday."
-
Listen and Repeat (Pronunciation Practice)
- Click on the Listen button and listen to sentences in both tenses.
- Repeat each sentence aloud to practice pronunciation. Aim for clarity in your verb endings (e.g., the "s" in "walks" or the "-ed" in "walked").
- Record yourself using the Record button and compare your pronunciation with the example.
-
Fill-in-the-Blank Activity
- In this part of the lesson, you will complete sentences by choosing the correct form of the verb in either present or past simple tense.
- Click on each blank to see a list of options, and select the correct verb form for each sentence.
- If you’re unsure, think about the context: Is the action happening now, as a routine, or did it happen in the past?
-
Sentence Reordering
- Practice your understanding of sentence structure by reordering mixed-up sentences into the correct order.
- Drag and drop the words to form sentences in either present simple or past simple tense.
- Review each sentence to ensure the verbs match the correct tense based on context.
-
Listening Comprehension
- Listen to short audio clips describing everyday routines or past events.
- After listening, answer a few comprehension questions to test your understanding of tense usage.
-
Quiz: Identify the Tense
- Take a short quiz where you identify whether sentences are in the present simple or past simple tense.
- Read each sentence carefully and select either "Present Simple" or "Past Simple."
-
Reflection (Written Response)
- In the final section, write a few sentences about your daily routine (using present simple) and about what you did last weekend (using past simple).
- Submit your reflection to get feedback from your instructor.
Tips:
- Present Simple often uses the base verb form for most subjects, with an "s" or "es" added for third-person singular (he, she, it).
- Past Simple commonly uses the "-ed" ending for regular verbs (e.g., "walked"), but remember some verbs are irregular (e.g., "went").
Completion:
Be sure to complete all sections of the MiniLesson and submit your recorded and written responses. This activity will help you recognize when to use each tense in everyday conversations and improve your accuracy in both speaking and writing.
