Activity: Main Idea Detective
Objective:
Learners will identify and summarize the main ideas of the text and answer comprehension questions to deepen understanding.
Materials Needed:
- Printed copies of the short text (or shared digitally on the LMS)
- Comprehension questions (listed on the LMS or printed)
- Worksheet for responses (digital or printed)
Instructions:

Pre-reading (5 minutes):
Ask learners to predict the content of the text based on the title or any available images. This warms up critical thinking and prepares them for comprehension. -
Reading (10-15 minutes):
Learners read the short text independently or in pairs, underlining or highlighting sentences that seem important or convey the main ideas. -
Main Idea Summary (10 minutes):
In pairs or small groups, learners summarize the main ideas in 2-3 sentences. Encourage them to think about the "who, what, when, where, why" of the text. -
Comprehension Questions (10 minutes):
Provide learners with a few comprehension questions targeting the main ideas and supporting details. Example questions might include:- What is the primary purpose of the text?
- What evidence does the author provide to support the main idea?
- How does the text make you feel, and why?

Share and Discuss (5-10 minutes):
Groups share their summaries and answers with the class, comparing different interpretations and supporting each other’s understanding. -
Reflection (Optional - 5 minutes):
To wrap up, ask learners to write or discuss what strategies helped them identify the main ideas and answer the questions.
