Activity: Vocabulary in Context - Forum & Speaking Practice
Objective:
Learners will practice using target vocabulary in both written and spoken formats, receive feedback, and improve their vocabulary usage in context.
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Materials Needed:
- List of target vocabulary words
- Online discussion forum (within LMS)
- Video conferencing tool for spoken practice (if online)
- Instructor-provided feedback rubric
Instructions
1. Vocabulary Introduction (10-15 minutes)
- Begin by introducing a set of target vocabulary words related to a specific topic (e.g., "technology," "workplaces," "culture"). Provide definitions, example sentences, and any important collocations.
- Review any difficult pronunciation and usage notes for each word.
2. Forum Post Task (Written Practice) - 20 minutes
- Ask learners to write a short forum post (100-150 words) using at least three target vocabulary words.
- Provide a prompt related to the topic. For example: “Describe a technological device you use frequently and explain how it has impacted your life.”
- Instruct students to read and respond to at least one peer’s post, using at least one target vocabulary word in their reply.
3. Spoken Practice (Video/Audio Discussion) - 20 minutes
- Organize learners into pairs or small groups in breakout rooms (if online) and assign them to discuss the same topic used in the forum post.
- Instruct students to use at least three target vocabulary words during the conversation.
- Provide students with conversation starters to help keep the discussion going.
4. Peer Feedback (Written & Spoken) - 10 minutes
- After completing the written and spoken tasks, ask learners to review a peer’s forum post and spoken practice (based on recordings, if applicable).
- Provide a simple feedback guide with questions such as:
- Did the vocabulary fit the context?
- Was the vocabulary used correctly?
- Any suggestions for alternative words?
5. Instructor Feedback & Reflection (5-10 minutes per student)
- Review each student’s forum post and provide specific feedback on vocabulary usage, focusing on accuracy and context. Note any words that were misused and provide alternative examples.
- During class or in follow-up feedback, provide overall observations about vocabulary use in spoken practice. Offer examples or phrases to help learners better use target words naturally.
Assessment
- Assess students’ use of vocabulary in their written posts and spoken practice. Consider appropriateness, accuracy, and variety of vocabulary used.
- Give specific feedback for improvement, especially in context and formality.
