Level:
Intermediate (but adjustable for other levels by modifying vocabulary complexity)
Duration:
15-20 minutes
Materials Needed:
- List of target vocabulary words (10-15 words)
- Access to the Poodll ReadAloud plugin in the LMS
Instructions for Teachers
-
Select Vocabulary Words:
Choose vocabulary that aligns with the current lesson or a set of words that commonly challenge students in terms of pronunciation. You might select words with complex sounds, syllable structures, or stress patterns. -
Set Up the Activity in Poodll ReadAloud:
- Open the Poodll ReadAloud activity in your LMS (e.g., Moodle).
- Create a new activity titled “Vocabulary Pronunciation Practice.”
- Upload the list of target vocabulary words as the text students will read aloud.
- Set the attempt limit (e.g., 2-3 attempts) to allow for practice and improvement.
-
Configure Feedback Settings:
Enable automatic pronunciation scoring in Poodll ReadAloud to give learners instant feedback. Select feedback options that display word accuracy and areas for improvement.
Instructions for Students
-
Practice the Vocabulary:
Review the list of vocabulary words provided. Make sure you understand each word's meaning, and feel free to look up the pronunciation if needed. -
Complete the ReadAloud Activity:
- Click on the Poodll ReadAloud link to start the activity.
- Read each word aloud as clearly as possible. Don’t rush—focus on accurate pronunciation.
- After reading, Poodll will analyze your pronunciation and provide a score and feedback.
-
Review Feedback:
Pay attention to which words received lower accuracy scores and note any specific feedback (such as mispronunciations or syllable stress errors). Practice these words again, then try another attempt if you’re allowed. -
Reflection:
After completing the activity, think about which sounds or words you found challenging. Write down a few notes about what you will work on to improve your pronunciation.
Teacher Tips
- Provide Additional Practice Resources: Include links to pronunciation resources, such as online dictionaries with audio pronunciation or language learning apps focusing on specific sounds.
- Offer Feedback (if not automated): Review students’ attempts and provide any extra pointers as needed, focusing on common pronunciation challenges.
- Encourage Peer Practice: If possible, set up a forum where students can share which words they found most challenging and help each other with tips for improvement.
Outcome
By the end of the activity, students will have received feedback on their pronunciation for a set of vocabulary words, enabling them to identify and focus on specific pronunciation challenges.
