Activity Title: Hangman - Everyday Words
Objective: Reinforce commonly used vocabulary and spelling through a fun, interactive game.
Level: Beginner to Intermediate
Duration: 15-20 minutes
Materials:
- Whiteboard or virtual whiteboard (for online classes)
- List of target vocabulary words (tailored to your class level)
- Optional: Digital Hangman game tool (if using an LMS like Moodle, consider adding a hangman plugin or use a shared document)
Instructions
-
Preparation
Before the activity, create a list of everyday vocabulary words that match the students' current learning focus (e.g., “school,” “family,” “weather,” or “shopping” vocabulary). -
Set Up the Game
Draw a Hangman scaffold on the board (or set up the digital version in your LMS). Choose a word from your list and draw a line for each letter of the word on the board. -
Explain the Rules
Explain to students that they will guess the word by suggesting letters. Every correct guess fills in the blank, while every incorrect guess adds a part to the hangman. Remind them that they need to work together to guess the word before the “hangman” drawing is complete! -
Playing the Game
- Begin by inviting one student to suggest a letter.
- If the letter is in the word, fill it in the correct blank(s). If not, add a body part to the hangman.
- Continue calling on students to suggest letters, building the word with correct guesses.
-
Provide Hints if Needed
After a few incorrect guesses, give a hint related to the word’s category (e.g., “This is something we use in the kitchen” for the word "spoon"). -
Vocabulary Reinforcement
Once the word is guessed (or revealed), review its meaning, usage, and pronunciation. Ask students to make a sentence with the word to reinforce comprehension. -
Repeat the Game
Choose new words as time allows. Try to ensure that all students get a turn to guess letters.
