Activity: My Goals for English Learning (Using Digital Sticky Notes)
Objective: Encourage learners to reflect on their personal English learning goals and share them with the class for accountability and motivation.
Materials Needed:
- An online whiteboard tool with sticky note functionality (e.g., Padlet, Google Jamboard, Miro, or your LMS’s built-in board if available)
Steps:
-
Introduce the Activity: Begin by explaining to the students the importance of setting personal goals for language learning. Discuss how goals can guide their efforts and provide a sense of accomplishment as they progress.
-
Guiding Questions for Goal Setting: Ask students to consider these questions to help them define their goals:
- Why do I want to improve my English skills? (e.g., career, travel, studies)
- What specific skills do I want to work on? (e.g., speaking, listening, writing)
- How do I plan to achieve this goal? (e.g., practice regularly, watch English movies)
- What challenges might I face, and how can I overcome them?
-
Creating Digital Sticky Notes: Have each student create a digital sticky note on the shared board with their own English learning goals. Encourage them to keep it simple but specific. For example:
- "I want to improve my speaking skills to feel confident during presentations."
- "My goal is to learn 10 new vocabulary words each week."
-
Pin and Share: Once the sticky notes are created, ask each student to “pin” their note on the board. You can ask volunteers to read their goals aloud or facilitate small breakout rooms where students can share with peers.
-
Encourage Interaction: Allow classmates to "like," comment, or offer support on each other’s goals. This interaction fosters a supportive learning environment.
-
Follow-Up: Set a reminder for students to revisit their goals periodically. This can be weekly or monthly, where they can update their sticky note with progress or create a new one for fresh goals.
Additional Tips:
- Pin the Board: Make this board a central, ongoing part of the course so students can check in on their progress.
- Celebrate Achievements: At the end of each term or unit, acknowledge students who achieved their goals or made significant progress.
