Activity: One-on-One Pronunciation Practice
Objective: To improve pronunciation skills through individual feedback from the instructor.
Activity Description:
-
Preparation:
- Select a list of words and phrases related to a current topic (e.g., greetings, introductions, or common everyday phrases).
- Prepare an audio or video recording of these words and phrases pronounced clearly and slowly by the instructor or a native speaker.
-
Practice Phase:
- Individual Practice: Learners listen to the recording and practice saying each word or phrase out loud on their own.
- Paired Practice (Optional): Learners can then pair up with a classmate to practice together, listening and helping each other with pronunciation.
-
Instructor Feedback:
- Schedule one-on-one sessions with each student (these can be 3-5 minutes) where the instructor listens to the learner pronounce the words and phrases.
- The instructor provides specific, constructive feedback on sounds, intonation, and stress patterns, demonstrating the correct pronunciation as needed.
- If possible, use visual aids like phonetic symbols or diagrams of the mouth and tongue positions to clarify challenging sounds.
-
Reflection:
- After the feedback session, the learner records themselves saying the same words and phrases, integrating the feedback.
- Learners then compare this recording with the original recording and note any areas of improvement.
-
Follow-up:
- In the next class, have learners practice the same set of words and phrases briefly as a warm-up.
- Provide encouragement and acknowledge improvements to build confidence.
